Planning around the rainy season in Indonesia and Thailand

Neither country has one wet season. The Andaman and Gulf coasts of Thailand are out of phase with each other, and Indonesia adds a third pattern.

"Avoid the rainy season" is advice that assumes there is one. Across our two countries there are at least three distinct patterns, and they do not line up. Used properly, that is an advantage: there is almost always somewhere in range that is in its dry window.

Thailand: two coasts, out of phase

The Andaman coast - Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak - is wettest roughly May to October. The Gulf coast, and Koh Samui in particular, runs a different cycle with its heaviest rain toward the end of the year. That means a beach programme in June points to Samui, and the same programme in November points to the Andaman side. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin follow the broader mainland pattern of a wetter middle-to-late year.

Chiang Mai's other season

Rain is not the binding constraint in the north. Agricultural burning affects air quality in roughly March and April, sometimes significantly. For an outdoor-heavy programme it is worth planning around, and it is not something a hotel will raise unprompted.

Indonesia: broadly November to March

The wet season across Bali, Java and Lombok runs broadly November to March, with the dry window through the middle of the year. Eastern destinations like Labuan Bajo have their own rhythm and their own sea-state considerations, which matter more than rainfall when the programme involves boats.

What "rainy season" actually means operationally

In most of both countries it means a heavy downpour for part of the afternoon, not continuous rain. That is entirely workable with a real wet-weather plan: a covered alternative held under option rather than hoped for, a strike plan for outdoor production that can be executed in twenty minutes, and transfer timings with slack in them.

The commercial upside

Shoulder and green-season rates are materially lower, and availability at properties that are impossible in January opens up. For a group whose programme is largely indoors, deliberately booking into a wetter month is one of the more effective ways to buy a better venue with the same budget.
